Rectal Thermometer

Rectal thermometers are said to be the most accurate type of thermometer in measuring body temperature. A rectal thermometer, either the smallest or the largest rectal thermometer, contains mercury. A medical attendant or a nurse uses rectal thermometer by first shaking the mercury to below the 90 °F mark. Lubricating rectal thermometer with petroleum jelly is a must to ensure the smooth insertion. Once inside the rectum, two minutes must be allotted to allow complete period in taking the measurement. This method has often been refused for many reasons and the oral method is oftentimes preferred.

Many people choose to take their measurement orally rather than using a rectal thermometer because of its convenience by orally taking measurements. There is no need to do lubrication and embarrassing insertion can be eliminated. The rectal thermometer gives the most accurate way of body temperature determination because it is actually measuring the internal part of the body which is free from any other factor that might contribute to the amount of the heat our body may acquire.

On the internet, many or hundreds of free rectal thermometer stories were published about some tips on when a rectal thermometer provides a more accurate reading and other related tips. Some stories pointed out about why not to take a rectal temperature immediately after an activity, a bowel movement, or a hot shower. Our body is not an excellent insulator and external temperature caused by physical activities may change the internal temperature. Other stories pointed out to never to use a glass oral thermometer in rectum because it is slender and easier to break compared to a rectal thermometer.

There are many other types of thermometers known today. At home, part of our first aid kit is an oral thermometer. In the industries where monitoring of the environment temperature and humidity are important, primary thermometers are widely used. Processes involved in industries require that a special temperature and humidity be part of the standard operating procedures followed as compliance to the regulating agencies. In most research laboratories where high temperature and low temperature reaction of different chemicals are involved, a longer and a wider range of temperature scales are used. Some researches in combustion reaction associated with a high temperature of more than 1000 °C often needs a high technology thermometer.

But with all these differences, the bottom line is to ensure the proper way of using each kind. Rectal thermometers provide the most accurate reading although they are not always preferred. Whichever method is used, it is best to know everything about the different methods so as to ensure the best decision for your health.
